The balance sheet is a financial statement that reports on a company's assets, liabilities and shareholders' equity for a specific earnings period. Basically, the balance sheet shows what a company owns, how much debt they owe, and how much is being invested by its shareholders.

The line items in a balance sheet are used by investors to calculate financial ratios that assist them in their investment decisions.
